    Clearly this isn’t going to work. Physics deals with that. The mass of the upper area will be so significant compared to the point of weakness that it would snap. You’d need a base that was several miles wide and a couple of miles high.

    Actually it is not impossible. The problem is you're all looking at the problem from the wrong point of view.
    Instead of using a conventional elevator that is dependent upon a fantastic unfeasible cable of non existent material that can support its own weight and the payload.
    There is another way.
    By building an artificial mountain, of ordinary terrestrial material. To the altitude of 250 miles high (more or less). Where a staging area can be utilized to deploy and recover payloads and personnel going to and returning from space. Using conventional boosters, tugs and freighters.
    Inside the mountain conventional elevators (in stages like a normal express elevator in a skyscraper) can carry passengers and small payloads.
    While larger freight elevators can carry bigger loads.
    Also on the exterior of the mountain, using ordinary railroad tracks and special tracks (at the upper altitudes where microgravity is a problem with oversized freight) electric trains can haul finished components for habitats and space faring vessels. As well as retrieve inbound commerce such as ore, and what ever else may become commercially consumer goods for the erth.
    I have a page on Facebook that I haven't had the resources to devote to this topic, but it is there.
    In addition to the mountain itself, the upper surface areas could accommodate enough wind turbines to effectively eliminate the power needs for the entire planet, with 24/7 dependable clean energy.
    Also in the basement of this mountain, all the toxic waste, including radioactive waste can be entombed permanently and safely for eternity.
    As for where to build it? There are possibilities at Antarctica, the North Pole, Australia, and the Gobi Desert, because there are too many people everywhere else on the planet.
    But it can be built, within a lifetime or sooner. With a surplus of manual labor, it may be possible to eliminate planet wide poverty, by giving or recruiting people jobs to build it.
    The Space Elevator Project could also be the tool to create unity and cooperation for all the people of the Earth.
    With cheap safe and expedient access to space, anyone who wants to leave could migrate to an off planet colony, or slow boat to another star.
    I've addressed all the issues, I just haven't had the opportunity to put it all in text or paper.

    This makes no sense. I ran the numbers on this. LEO is around 1200 miles up. Earth's about 4,000 radius. Starting from 12 miles up does save some of your launch energy. A whopping 1.4%. All that investment and construction to save such a small amount of fuel? I don't see that it's a game changer.

    why not an anchored solar sail with some sort of pulley system…… I mean if you want like a cost effective way or something…… like  a high attitude balloon anchored to the ground that would then have a solar sail anchored to that and like could "elevate" things from the ground I have a better idea still but it might be a little "out-there" for this crowd……
