In Obama's few months left in his first term, he appointed Merrick Garland supreme court justices only one most after Antonin Scalia died. Of course, it wasn't approved because they were in the minority in the Senate. If Obama thought it was the right thing to do, then why did he nominate Garland? By the way, didn't Chief Justice John Roberts voted on LGBT rights and immigrant protections? Didn't he on June 29th ruled in a 5-4 decision striking down a law that would have limited abortion access in Louisiana? The last time I checked, he was supposed to be "destroying" Roe v Wade.

The Repulican party doesn't believe in everyone having the right to vote. They never have. Now there are a select group of super rich buying our government and taking democracy out of the US. I see this as treason. Something very drastic must happen or they will succeed. They're very close now.

If Mitt Romney wants to become President Romney one day, he needs to pull a "Thumbs-down McCain" when it comes time to vote. That will launch him into political legend among the 70-something percent of Americans who don't want a judge appointed pre-election.

Well.. the republicans forced their will in 2016 with M Garland (stopped his appointment about 227 days before election) and are now in 2020 forcing Barrett in about 22 days before election – nothing can really be done – the Republicans have the Senate and the Presidency …. So if Dems win back the Senate and the Presidency …. they should then force things too: change the rules to increase and pack the Supreme Court (they can legally go up to 15 judges) and then the “balance” will be reestablished … is it ideal? No … but with these type of republicans … it is what it is !!!

  15. @WildwoodClaire1

    January 7, 2024 at 11:15 am

Disingenuous Republican efforts to cast as "religious bigotry" any question about the nominee's opinion on abortion or Roe v Wade are obviously intended to enflame their evangelical base, who consider any legal, policy, or social impediment preventing them from imposing their religious views on everyone else as an impingement of their "rights."

That judge is not suitable because she could not protect her own children. They are on camera exposed to senators who were shedding viral load in the white house. If she cannot protect her own children then how expect her to protect the constitution?

  38. @IAmSuzyQ

    January 7, 2024 at 11:15 am

Every single Democrat should have begun their opening statement by quoting Lindsey Graham, just like he asked them to do…
“I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination."

“If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump's term, and the primary process has started, we'll wait to the next election.”

We're way past the "primary process"; we're well into the GENERAL ELECTION already! Lindsey Graham's word is worthless, and the Democrats should take this opportunity to illustrate that fact, and make it known to the SC voters.

    January 7, 2024 at 11:15 am

Let us VOTE in GREAT NUMBERS for BIDEN/HARRIS so there is NO QUESTION as
to who is the clear WINNER! We have a chance to save our DEMOCRACY!
    Let's DO IT!

  40. @discreetanonymus2723

    January 7, 2024 at 11:15 am

Amy Coney Barrett will NEVER have the trust of the People of the United States. She is not stupid, so she knows she is a purely political nominee. If she had any self-respect as person and judge, she would decline the nomination and leave it to the next president to nominate her or anyone else. The fact that she does not has this decency proves her own religious bias prevails above justice.

  41. @paulbrowne3033

States countries democracy evolves sometimes through distress the constitution/legislation process should reflect this reality we do in Europe after harsh experience through history

Rep. Dean: Trump ‘Lit The Match’ That Caused The Capitol Hill Riots | Andrea Mitchell | MSNBC

Published

Congresswoman and impeachment manager Madeleine Dean (D-PA) tells Andrea Mitchell that President Trump “lit the match,” causing the riots at the Capitol on January 6. Dean also pushed back on the notion that impeaching a former president is unconstitutional. “And we do know, number one, it is constitutional because the text of the constitution is not just about removal as a result of impeachment and conviction but also future disqualification. The framers knew very much the threat of mobs and demagogues,” she said. Aired on 01/25/2021.
