Elizabeth Warren: ‘The Wealth Tax Is Popular Across America’ | The ReidOut | MSNBC
Senator Elizabeth Warren makes the case for the wealth tax: “This would affect the top 1/10th of 1% in America. And it would be a way to raise about $3 trillion in revenue. Joe Biden ran on raising taxes on the people at the very top and on giant corporations … (Republicans) get why this is popular.” Aired on 03/15/2021.

George Conway: ‘Lying, intimidating, bullying. That’s Trump at his worst, and that’s Trump always’

1. You say that the tax is only on the rich. That is practically the same way federal income taxes started. It was just a small percentage on rich incomes. Now we all are paying income taxes at more than the highest bracket when federal income taxes started (I think like 7% or so). So while the current proposal (if implemented) would only be a tax on billionaires, I don't doubt that the amount of people subject to this tax would increase and increase as the threshold for being subject to this tax would get lower and lower, until we are all subject to this tax.
2. Just because it's popular (which may be up to debate) doesn't mean it should be implemented. The proposal is just plain unconstitutional. It is a non-income based direct tax, so it has to be proportional (meaning everyone pays about the same amount). Such a proposal would not be proportional, so it would be unconstitutional. Plus, it might also violate the 5th Amendment. "No person shall…be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." If the federal government seizes a person's actual wealth, theoretically they might have to compensate them an amount equal to the worth of the taken property, which would be the wealth that was taken, making the whole thing redundant.
3. I find it a little disturbing that the federal government would have the power to do this. Sure, it's a small percentage, but what's to stop somebody from imposing what is essentially a cap on the amount of wealth a person can have by setting the percentage to 100%?

Warren is either an enormous fool or a liar, or both. Inflation is due to the increase in the money supply. Add on top of it the idiotic supply restrictions placed on energy by Biden's policies and you have runaway inflation. Energy is a component of the price of every good or service consumers purchase. What has happened recently to the cost of energy?
As I said Elizabeth Warren is a fool, and Joy Reid is a terrible host because she didn't ask Warren a single tough question. Glad Reid's show is being canceled, but the morons at MSNBC will find someone worse to take her place.
@TheNycKraken

January 8, 2024 at 12:10 am
I agree with this wealth tax. Middle class Americans pay 1.5% as property taxes on their largest asset. For many Americans, the house is their only asset until they are in their late 50s. So why shouldn't the ultra wealthy pay the same 1.5%, or more, on all of their wealth too.
@kuistancfraine3488
January 8, 2024 at 12:10 am
Not only possible, Necessary, these fat whites need 2 pay their share. The middle class has been taking it in the shorts for long enuf. These folks have accountants, & tax lawyers to hide their assets from taxation so they can escape having to pay & they can keep hoarding wealth. Meanwhile, Jonh Q. Public eats it. It's time to pay up. The old tax laws from the 50's they oaid upwards of 75%!!! We could go back to that if they don't like this option.

Wealth Taxes have consistently failed everywhere they have been implemented. They have a lot of flaws and the beneficiaries will be tax lawyers and the lobbyists who support them while ordinary American overseas will once again get hit with outsized "unintended" consequences. The rich can escape these taxes. There are better alternatives (that should have been implemented in the 90's!) that would reduce inequity and the accumulation of power through money. This is nothing more than Neo-liberal legislation dressed up in Progressive rhetoric. Read the book by the two French academics who advise Warren and you'll get an idea of how authoritarian this will get.

First of all Joy you are looking good My Grandfather could not read because he had to drop out of the second grade to Sharecropp, Why do you want to tax the people who increase the production of the World that allow people to occupy Wall Street. How can a person protest for weeks without working. When in human history can a person sit around and not hunt and gather or farm. You need to tax people who are sitting around everyday drinking and doing drugs and not producing for society and only taking, I see them everyday where I live and leave the producers alone. Over 80% of millionaires are self made

@e.458
January 8, 2024 at 12:10 am
I'd like them to argue more with need-based justice – or with utilitarianism . Taking (even hundreds of) millions away from billionaires does not really hurt them, they still have enough to afford all the luxury and power in the world. So, these taxes really do not cause any real suffering for them. Not investing in infrastructure, healthcare, childcare, fair housing, education, fair wages, etc. does cause a great deal of suffering to poor people. It can lead to homelesness, hunger, death of preventable causes, … (there are dozens more negative consequences of poverty)
So, why do poor people "deserve" this help if they (supposedly) didn't earn it? Because it would be inhumane to want them to suffer when it could be remedied without causing suffering to anyone else.
It's not about who is deserving, it's about how everyone can lead a good life. (See Declaration of Independence or the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard -for Christians)
