The Rise And Fall Of AOL

Published

on

At its peak in December 1999, AOL had a market capitalization of $222 billion dollars. Since then, the influx of broadband internet and the burst of the dot-com bubble reduced the one- time internet behemoth to a shadow of its former self.

AOL once dominated email, internet connectivity, online news, and chat. AOL couldn’t maintain its superior position as subscription and advertising revenue dried up with the shift from dial-up modems to cable broadband. A disastrous merger with Time Warner in 2000 was unwound in 2009. Along the way, AOL tried but failed to buy Facebook, YouTube and a minority stake in Chinese Internet company Tencent, Eventually, AOL to sold to Verizon in 2015 for just $4.4 billion.

Let us not forget how AOL's own community service drove it into the ground. AOL had become so cocky with its large user base that it did not care about quality standards. People could have accounts terminated through false reports, password stealing with trojan horse programs was prevalent, etc, and AOL just didn't care until the users declined and they felt like they were forced to. Also, AOL as a web browser just sucked compared to Internet Explorer and Netscape. Once instant messenger become a free product there was no need to for the full service.

The problem with AOL and Yahoo is that they stayed static.

AOL should have evolved into webhosting as cloud services, now dominated by AWS and Google.

Yahoo should have evolved into video and social content, now dominated by Youtube and Facebook.

If AOL internet business would've merged Time Warners "RoadRunner" business as AOL RoadRunner, then they would've had a chance.

All those disks they constantly sent to me in the mail got as frisbees for my dogs, I shot a lot of them up as target practice with my pellet gun rifles, practiced buffing out scratches for cd scratch repair, you could literally do what you wanted with them and get another one instantly lol. Good times. Same with the phone books. R.I.P dial up and AOL

who would use that crap service with there bloated software anyways when you could dial into netzero or juno for free 10 hours a month internet? not to mention you could easily bypass the timer and so you now have free unlimited dialup internet??? all you had to do was flush the software once a week so the adware program would not start , it was trickle downloaded in the background and was very obnoxious if you let it start !

The president's Russophobic rhetoric looks like a hysteria to divert attention from his own stupid decisions in the form of sanctions. Any sanctions have a downside, Putin still supplies oil under contracts at old prices, and America is already shaking about Biden's decisions. And what will happen when Putin will supply oil at new prices? Something to think about…

My husband and I met on AOL. It will be 22 years in June. Without AOL, we never would have met since we lived in different states over 3 hours away from each other, so AOL was obviously a huge part of my life. I remember when my parents bought our first family PC in the fall of 1995 and the first thing we did was sign up for AOL. I had just turned 14 years old and was in the 8th grade. Every night was an endless battle over the phone line from thereon out until my parents finally caved for a second phone line for the computer in 1997. I remember getting so annoyed whenever the call waiting would kick me offline. Of course, it would always happen right in the middle of instant messaging with somebody. Then, there were the nights when all of the access numbers were busy and you had to keep trying over and over to get a connection. Kids today will never understand the struggle of trying to use the internet in the 90s!

Meta Is Facing Its Biggest Trial Yet, And Its Future Hangs In The Balance

Published

on

By

Meta is facing what could be its most consequential trial yet, as 29 state attorneys general accuse the tech giant of knowingly designing Facebook and Instagram to addict children and misleading the public about the risks. The states are seeking civil penalties that could approach $200 billion and changes to core features like infinite scroll and autoplay, while Meta says the claims are unsubstantiated and that it has built strong protections for teens. The outcome of the federal trial could reshape how social media platforms are designed and open the door to greater liability for companies across the industry. CNBC’s Julia Boorstin examines why this case could become Big Tech’s “Big Tobacco” moment, and what a loss could mean for Meta’s business and the future of social media.
