The complaint ought to be that it's a lousy poem and THAT'S why it shouldn't be given a second thought.

Let them ban it. Those kids will find a way. And it will be greater in impact when they get emancipated. Speaking from my experience.

This is racial fascism. That one parent has no idea what literature IS! OPEN YOUR MINDS, PLEASE! Free speech should not be a crime! Enough with the banning of books. I myself read Amanda Gorman's book recently in Pens and Pages class.

I am not an American, but I was curious, so I read the poem. Would I ban it – absolutely not. Would I praise it – as a poem written by a young girl – yes. As a political reality – No. It completely ignores the savage decline in the quality of life for people of colour in many urban areas. I could see it being a useful inclusion in a lesson as one of several poems comparing poetic idealism to objective reality. The praise heaped on it is based on political projection, which is why De Santis has banned it.
He should have had schools analyse it instead, but he would have to trust his teachers to be objective, and he doesn't. It is not about the poem itself. It is about a breakdown of trust between educators and parents.
De Santos was elected to represent parents, and he has.
