NBC News: Officer Who Fatally Shot Rayshard Brooks Disciplined For Use Of Force With Firearm | MSNBC

Published

on

Family attorney Justin Miller tells Lawrence O’Donnell that the disciplinary history showing the officer who killed Rayshard Brooks had multiple prior complaints, including a reprimand for use of force with a firearm in 2016, was “very troubling” and could be a “very big piece to the puzzle” in building a case against the officer if criminal charges are filed. They will never convict him of murder. The case is over charged.

Were proper arrest procedures followed? Doesn't look like it before they went hands on.

I can’t stand Pinocchio Joe, but he would be less odious if Katie Porter was his VP pick. Otherwise, I may have to persuade Jesse the Body Ventura to run on the Green Party ticket.

The books will be cooked by the time Joe Biden take over and we will never know. Ms. Porter should be our next V.P. I think she will truly find out what we need to know about this criminal tRump and how much American taxpayers have been cheated out of their hard earned money.

The elephant in the room that is not addressed in all the talk about police violence and new policies is demonstrated by this horrible event. There is no suggestion to vet applicants, give them psychological testing to determine if they are sociopaths, psychopaths, or just plain bullies before they are given a badge and a gun and sheltered in the "blue line". A researcher stated that he found that over 40% of police are sociopaths. So, if that is the case, then all the training in the world is not going to change their perspectives or behavior. There is no conscience, no sense of right and wrong, just power. I watched the entire video from the original officer's camera. Once Rolf appeared on the scene he took over and the police approach changed from a reasonable intervention to what appeared to me to be a cat and mouse game that Rolf seemed to be dragging out and enjoying. When reason would dictate an intervention of staying with Brooks while he called his family to come and get him, to finding that a .101 breath test was just enough to declare him over the limit and arresting him without informing him of the result of the breath test or identifying that he was actually breaking the law driving drunk, to arresting him for "being too drunk TO drive" which is not a law. Brooks had offered several times that he would walk home, but that was not Rolf's intent. This is the problem, with the support of the "blue line", his police brother on the scene supported Rolf's brutality. Again, police training is not compelling the police community to clean their own house as other licensed professions must do.

Here in Australia we have a TV show called RBT [Random Breath Test], and it shows the efforts to keep drunks off our roads. It does show the difference the police in both countries handle the situation. Here if you fail the roadside test, you are arrested on the spot, and asked to go to the police station for another test. But the big difference is that we treat the arrested person in quite a different way, we don't put them in cuffs and act in very heavy handed way we see your police do.

Stand up all victims of oppression
For the tyrants fear your might!
Don't cling so hard to your possessions
For you have nothing if you have no rights!
    Let flagging ignorance be ended
For respect makes the empires fall!
    Freedom is merely privilege extended
Unless enjoyed by one and all

    So comrades come rally
    For the struggle carries on
    The Internationale
    Unites our world in song
    So comrades come rally
For this is the time and place
    The International ideal
    Unites the human race

Let no one build walls to divide us
Walls of hatred nor walls of stone
Come greet the dawn and stand beside us
We'll live together or we'll die alone
In our world poisoned by exploitation
Those who have taken, now they must give!
And end the vanity of nations,
We've but one Earth on which to live.

And so begins the final drama
In the streets and in the fields.
We stand unbowed before their armour
We defy their guns and shields!
When we fight provoked by foes aggression.
Let us be inspired by life and love
And though they offer us concessions
Change will not come from the sky !

It’s really sad how many people think it was justified that the police officer shot Rayshard despite the fact that Rayshard was running away from the cop and only had a taser, which has been classified as a non lethal weapon. The cops had Rayshard’s information, they could have just let him go or kept chasing him, shooting him is not equal forces in that situation!
I can completely understand why Rayshard panicked when the cop decided to arrest him, especially after the entire situation had been civil. There wasn’t a reason to arrest him! I know now with MADD that cops arrest drunk drivers cause out of safety but in this situation Rayshard wasn’t slobbery drunk. The cops could have got him to his family, talked to his family and made sure they wouldn’t let him leave to grab his car or let him drive or leave. Rayshard was the most sober drunk person I’ve ever seen!! I think he wasn’t drunk, he said he had travelled for the 1st anniversary of his mom’s death and that it was his daughter’s birthday. I think he was more tired and mentally exhausted than drunk! On the breathalyzer he didn’t blow very high at all and breathalyzer’s aren’t reliable for a accurate number, blood tests are.
The entire situation up till the arrest was handled properly. That cop didn’t have to shoot Rayshard at all!! It was heartbreaking to see Rayshard’s family speak at the press conference, especially his little daughter. She’s always going associate her birthday with the murder of her dad and that’s horrible!! I had something traumatic happen on my 10th birthday and it’s something that lives with you forever. You don’t want to celebrate your birthday, your birthday isn’t special, people morn on your birthday, you do too every year. It’s something that never goes away no matter how old you get. My heart breaks for that little girl and all of Rayshard’s other kids and family.
Anyone that thinks Rayshard deserved to die cause he took the cops taser and ran, I hope you never have a run in with a power hungry cop.
It’s obvious considering everything Rayshard was scared to death when they went to arrest him! Maybe it’s cause so many black Americans have ended up dead, maybe it’s cause of the pandemic raging out of control in the prisons, maybe it’s cause once you have a record your screwed! We don’t know exactly what he was thinking at that point but I don’t blame him for being terrified! He had a family and kids to think of. Rayshard was nothing but polite during that complete interaction and didn’t really screw up on the testing either. He got a bit confused with the counting, but followed down to the exact number what the cop did.
Rayshard didn’t deserve to die. The system is broken.

In his 7 years on the force, Officer Garret Rolfe had 12 incidents that were reviewed before last week, some of which stemmed from civilian complaints and use of force, and three of which resulted in disciplinary action. He has also had five vehicular accidents. Records show Rolfe received a written reprimand in October 2017 for a use of force violation related to a firearm incident that took place in September 2016. There was also a conflict in August 2015 where Rolfe discharged his weapon, but no action was taken against him.

Maybe I'm biased, but that picture of Rolfe in his uniform makes him look like nothing but a southern redneck skinhead. Look at the hate in his eyes. All that's missing is the white robe & pointy mask.

In the city I live in, I would be hard-pressed to think of many police officers that I've seen that are over about 5/8. That lack of size is something that puts these cops at a severe disadvantage in any physical confrontation.

If these people are going to be running our streets, maybe we should hire people with the appropriate skill sets and size.

If a cop's only defense is going to be to use a weapon we're going to continue to to see that. Christ, take a high school wrestling class.

  29. @boxie001

to a cop even his own shadow can be made into a deadly weapon.

Not all police are 'HOTHEADS.' But there are enough 'hotheads' out there ruining it for other policemen and policewomen. There definitely is a problem 'HIRING.' There need to be more scrutinizing of applicants. More psychological tests given. Law enforcement is not a walk in the park. Most offenders are guilty of supporting a drug habit or their family in need. It's beginning to look like a 'Tale of Two Cities.' The Haves and the Have Nots. It is very much harder for the poor to be virtuous than it is for the rich. Charles Dickens.

Who gon’ check Trump, boo? These judges for a start, experts say

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare statement today, directly confronting the Trump administration after the president called for a judge to be impeached. Roberts defended the judiciary’s independence and rejected impeachment as a response to disagreeing with a jurist’s rulings, reminding Trump and the White House that, “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”
