Why American Farmers Are Nervous About USMCA

Published

on

For many American farmers, Canada and Mexico have become indispensable export markets at a time when trade disputes, weak commodity prices, and rising costs are already straining the agricultural economy. Iowa farmer Stu Swanson says many producers are operating on dwindling hope as financial pressures mount. CoBank CEO Tom Halverson argues that trade deals have helped US exports to Canada and Mexico grow roughly 600% since NAFTA’s creation. As negotiations begin, farmers are less focused on expanding the agreement than on preserving certainty and avoiding new disruptions that could further weaken an already fragile farm economy.

Stevenson Says Fed Is Waiting to See Economy Slow

Published

on

Betsey Stevenson, Professor of Public Policy and Economics at the University of Michigan’s Ford School and former Chief Economist of the Department of Labor, says the Fed’s decision to leave rates unchanged is puzzling because another increase is still likely. Stevenson says policymakers may be waiting to see whether the economy slows further before raising rates again. Stevenson says uncertainty around the midterm elections and potential changes in fiscal policy could also affect how high rates ultimately need to go. She speaks with Kailey Leinz on Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power.”
